Solar Thermal Storage Tank

The typical solar tank for a 4-person dwelling has about a 300-litre capacity. This tank has 2 heat exchangers. The top heat exchanger has an additional heating element. The lower heat exchanger contains the heat from the solar system. Warm water has a lower specific weight than cold water. Therefore the warm water will flow to the top of the tank. When more heat is required, the water from the solar loop has already been preheated and now requires about 40% less energy to reach the desired temperature because the water being used comes from the top of the tank.

The collectors are transferring their heat to the bottom of the tank. At this point, the heated water will rise and so more hot water can be stored at the top. The solar medium (propylene glycol) will transfer heat through the tube type heat exchanger into the tank.

The solar tank is made from steel and is glass lined. It is also well insulated. There are also tanks being used that are made from stainless steel. These are the best and most costly.
